“The use of an assignment rubric is a behaviour of exemplary faculty” (Leibold & Schwarz, 2015)

A rubric is a tool, usually in the form of a grid, used to measure and interpret the performance of students against predetermined learning objectives, success criteria or standards. A grading rubric makes explicit for students what you will use to judge their work, and helps identify areas of improvement and where guidance is needed.  You should use it to focus teaching and learning in a way that supports self directed learning.  The suggestion is to make the rubric available to students right from the start of the activity, so that they may use it as a reference for self assessment and peer feedback.

Create an Assessment Rubric

Click on figure 1, found below.  An excel document will open in a separate window.  In that file you will find a template with instructions to creating your assessment rubric. It also includes  sample rubrics designed to assess cooperative posts and online discussion (to be edited for your use). Once you finish your rubric, you may upload it to your preferred platform.

If you are creating a rubric to guide peer feedback and collaboration, here are some suggested behaviours to include:

  • Giving and receiving help and assistance
  • Exchanging resources and information
  • Explaining resources and information
  • Sharing knowledge with others
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Challenging others contributions
  • Advocating increased effort and perseverance among peers
  • Monitoring each other’s efforts and contributions.

Implementation Tips

  1. Discuss the rubric with students before they begin work.  The objective is to not only to reach a consensus of success criteria, but to ensure understanding of the expected performance.  You could do this either by allotting time for it in your lecture, or through a discussion thread in your platform.
  2. Explicitly show your students where the rubric is stored for later review.
  3. Coach your students on how to give peer feedback using the rubric you provided as a guide.
  4. To save time, you could create a feedback bank based on the rubric to facilitate your ability to provide timely feedback.
